A Cumbrian zoo is hosting their first ever themed event and taking visitors back in time to the stone age.

Brand new Caveman Day is coming to Lakeland Wildlife Oasis this May Bank Holiday, on Monday 6.

A range of activities will be spread throughout the day, allowing visitors to find out more about what life was like as an early human and see if they have what it took to be a caveman.

A stone age trail around the zoo, will see children need to collect clues to discover which of the animals is most closely related to the woolly mammoth.

There will also be posters showing some of the now extinct animals that were alive during the stone age, as well as the different species of humans they would have lived alongside at the time.

Zoo Manager, Dan Eccles said: “Caveman Day is the first event of its kind here, and hopefully will lead to more similar themed events in the future.

“The idea came from my keen love and interest of stone-age history, from the extinct species to the evolution of humans, and all in between. This is an area that I am very passionate about and is an area many people don't know too much about.”

Multiple activity and display stations will allow visitors to investigate a Caveman’s diet, try out some stone age music and make their own cave art.

A food table will demonstrate what Cavemen hunter-gatherers would have been eating, where and how they found food as well as the plants and berries that are still available to forage today.

Dan has also hand carved an early musical instrument, based on real life one’s archaeologists have discovered, which will be available to try alongside other instruments.

Using natural ingredients, just like they did thousands of years ago, you can learn to make your own paints and create cave art on a stone tile.

A station with real life bones, skins and hunting tools will teach visitors about prehistoric animals, Dan will be bringing in replica skulls from Stone age animals such as lions, hyena and lynx, which can be touched and explored.

To really learn what life was like as a caveman, visitors can discover the shelters used throughout the period and how early humans first controlled fire.

There will also be Stone-age talks and demonstrations all about caveman life, survival and the animals they would have faced, both extinct species and those that have evolved and can still be seen today.

Come dressed as a caveman to be in with a chance of winning a prize and drop into the café for themed treats, cakes and goodies.
