A group of Cumbrian Freemasons hosted their first charity fishing event of the year.

The Masonic Fishing Charity supported children with special needs in meeting a new challenge by providing a stimulating fishing experience.

The two-day event was held at Lupton Tarn, near Kendal and welcomed children from Sandgate School in Kendal as well as Sandside Lodge in Ulverston.

This enabled the children to try something new, take in the great outdoors and work towards building their confidence.

On the first day, the volunteers welcomed 16 children and spent their time teaching how to set up a rod and bait, which allowed the group to catch 24 fish. Day two saw another group of ten children enjoy time beside the water, as they reeled in 11 fish.

Neil Dixon, a spokesperson for Cumbria Freemasons said: "The Masonic Fishing Charity’s aim is to bring an interactive fishing and countryside experience to people and children with additional needs

"We want to help others, who would not usually have the opportunity, and to share and benefit from the pleasure that fishing in natural surroundings can bring.

"Charity is an integral part of the core principles of Freemasonry and the fishing events that we organise are part of our personal commitment to working in the community.”

The charity is part of Cumbria Freemasons and is completely ran by volunteers, it’s a non-profit making enterprise and is organised and hosted by Freemasons.

Mr Dixon added: "We had the pleasure of welcoming pupils from Sandgate school, near Kendal and Sandside Lodge, Ulverston helping them enjoy fishing and experiencing the outdoor experience, in a safe setting, with the weather being extremely kind."
