A school in Furness is hoping it can support its pupils' mental and physical health with new play areas.

Askam Village School is starting work on an 'exciting' project to make playtimes 'better'.

The scheme has been designed in conjunction with 'Outdoor Play And Learning' (OPAL), a national campaign with the focus of improving the health of primary school-age children across the country.

A spokesperson from Askam Village School said: "To facilitate this project, we will need to buy some new resources, move some things around on the playground and require some donations of unused items.

"The items we are looking for will enable us to enjoy a wider range of play experiences during playtimes.

"Initially, our plan is to build a number of different areas for the children to play."

OPAL want every school to produce a plan to show how they will ensure that every child has at least one hour's outstanding outdoor play every school day.

The school is now relying on public support to help bring in the resources they need to make the proposed changes.

These include: cars, farm toys, building blocks, dolls, dinosaurs, kitchen utensils, pipes, tubs and buckets, small spades and shovels, brooms, wooden pallets, large pieces of fabric, nets, thick ropes, pegs, plastic crates, logs, cable drums, pop up tents, and artificial grass.

If you are able to provide any of the items listed above, then you are asked to bring them into the school found on Lots Road.

"Some of the zones will be easy to set up and require minimal work so we aim to get these areas introduced as soon as we have the essential items," the spokesperson added.

"Other areas will require some maintenance, grounds work and building – we would be very grateful of anybody willing to donate their time to build structures, move items and help with grounds work."
