A mum from Walney has completed her first marathon at the age of 40 to raise money for a national charity.

Laura Corkill ran the London Marathon on Sunday, April 21 for The Lullaby Trust.

Laura, an aspiring midwife, is a mother of four and has so far raised over £2,400 for the charity.

She said: "I want to raise awareness and funds that will be helping families who have lost a baby to receive specialist help, funding research to prevent more babies from dying suddenly and unexpectedly, and allowing more parents to receive advice on safer baby sleep.

"Everyone's kind and generous support so far is crucial to creating a future where no baby dies suddenly and unexpectedly."

The Lullaby Trust is a charity that saves babies' lives and supports bereaved families.

Around three babies a week still die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), with the trust being committed to bringing that number down to zero.

Laura is on the brink of completing her midwifery degree, though that work had the potential to scupper her marathon aspirations.

Balancing dissertations and shifts on the labour ward meant that she was unable to train as much as she may have wanted to, though that did not stop her from crossing the finish line in the capital.

Laura received a large amount of support from her family on the day, with her husband and three of her children travelling to London to cheer her name throughout the miles.

Her dad and sister Jessica also travelled from Newton and Kendal to watch the race, while her mum and stepfather made the long journey from Langholm in the Scottish Borders to the capital for the occasion.

While this was her first full marathon, it was not the first time that Laura has gone the extra mile for charity.

Last year, she took part in the One Million Steps Challenge for Sands, a charity which offers emotional support and practical help to anyone affected by the death of a baby.
