THE mayor of Barrow is putting himself through an icy bath to raise money for a local charity.

Councillor Chris Altree is looking to raise money for CancerCare and will be taking the plunge at Barrow AFC's final home game of the season on Saturday, April 27.

Councillor Altree said: "I’m proud to support CancerCare - I have seen the amazing work they do supporting the people of Barrow and Furness.

"I have close friends who benefitted from their support and care and I know the massive impact it had on their lives.

"It is a vital service to our community and I hope to raise £1,000 to help this local charity.”

CancerCare, which has a centre on Duke Street in Barrow, works to provide free support to people affected by cancer and unexpected bereavement.

It has grown to be a much needed service in south Cumbria and Lancashire, helping countless people and their families through the ordeal of the illness.

Their clients benefit from professional one-to-one counselling, massage therapy, nutrition support, mindfulness coaching, and children’s therapy.

Mai Harrison, the fundraising and engagement officer at the charity, commented: "Chris’ support means the world to us at CancerCare.

"The fact he is willing to take an icy bath in front of all the Barrow AFC supporters is a testament to his dedication to his community and his willingness to go above and beyond for a good cause.

"The money he raises through this freezing challenge will help us continue to support the people of Furness - it costs nearly £1.9 million a year to provide free therapies from our four centres, and every penny raised means that our community can come to us and find care and compassion during difficult times."

There will be CancerCare volunteers at the match on Saturday with information about how to access the charity's services.
