Plans have been set out to improve road surfaces across south Cumbria with over £4.6 million of new funding.

Following on from an injection of £2.347 million between 2023 and 2024, Westmorland and Furness Council have secured funding for the same amount between 2024 and 2025.

This will be used for local road resurfacing and wider maintenance activity on the local highway network through the  Government’s Network North Road Resurfacing Fund.

Furness MP Simon Fell said: "I know from speaking to people across Barrow and Furness how frustrating potholes and poor-quality roads can be.

"A quarter of the casework which comes to my office is about potholes and road safety due to the poor condition of local roads."

Between now and 2034, the council is set to receive an additional £156.777 million through the national fund.

Resurfacing roads, cycleways and footways will be the priority, along with maintaining bridges and street lighting, and preventing potholes and other road defects.

“Travelling around Furness it’s so good to see so much resurfacing work going on – whether in Dalton, Ulverston, Barrow or beyond," Mr Fell added.

"This long-term funding gives the Council what it needs to plan and improve our roads for the future."
