A worker at a hospice in Ulverston is hoping that she can encourage more people to take part in an upcoming fundraiser.

Louise Askew is a strong supporter of St Mary's Hospice and, having completed the Helvellyn at Night event last year, is trying to get people signed up for the next iteration.

With Blencathra at Night taking place across June 8 and 9, Louise shared how the fundraiser helped her find love in the unlikeliest of places.

She said: “It was amazing, it was so good - me and my boyfriend both signed up around the same time and we weren’t actually together when we did so - but then we did it together and it was really good.

“It’s really amazing to see the amount of people that turn up, from those that work there to those in the community and those that take part because they’ve had family members use the services.”

Louise described how she loves working at the hospice, which meant signing up to an event and supporting the charity was an easy decision to make.

She said she would do anything to help keep the hospice going and it is why she has also taken part in more events designed to raise money for the cause.

"It’s one of the only places I’ve worked at where I’ve not dreaded getting up in the morning to go to work - as soon as I started working here, I just knew it was the place for me," she said.

"It’s so important because the way I look at it, the hospice is only partly funded by the NHS - I think about all the people I’ve cared for since working here and where would they be if the service wasn’t available."

The Blencathra at Night challenge involves an overnight ascent of the mountain range, with places still available for those looking to test themselves.

Coach transfers are also available to be booked from Barrow.
