A primary school in Barrow has caught the eye of many passers-by after a huge art project decorated the building.

Greengate Junior School is ‘thrilled’ with the progress of its beautiful mural which stretches across one of the outside walls.

Students, members of staff and school patrons raised money through BarrowFull, as well as Westmorland and Furness Council, to fund the artwork.

This allowed a local team called ArtWorks Art4All CIC to visit the school and work with pupils to come up with a design.

The main artist Sharon Wendy Tait held a workshop with Year 4 children who came together, shared their ideas and drew their own designs.

Once the eight and nine year olds had decided on a theme, Sharon brought all of their ideas and designs together to develop a unique mural.

The children wanted to reference Greengate’s most prominent aim – inclusion, as well as diversity and working together as a community.

Stephen Leigh, a senior teacher at Greengate, said the main organiser was Sara Hill, the assistant head.

"They did well dodging the rain and even got a cherry picker crane to help get to the top of the wall," said Stephen.
