WORKERS were spotted putting metal sheets over windows at a section of North Walney Nursery and Primary School months before its planned closure at the end of the academic year.

Last month, members of the cabinet for Westmorland and Furness Council approved proposals to close the Duddon Drive school on August 31.

In the public consultation period, five respondents stated concerns that the quality of education for the children would be negatively affected if they were compelled to relocate to other schools.

Numbers at the primary school dropped from 84 in 2019/2020 to 27 as of September 2023 and there is a ‘significant’ number of surplus places in the Walney Island area, a council report said.

On Saturday, April 6, resident Alan Williamson shared photos on social media of the primary school being 'boarded up yesterday.'

He called this 'the end of an era.'

In the photos workers appear to be putting metal sheets over the windows of a building in the school premises.

Several Walney and Barrow councillors have expressed their wish in meetings that the building be re-purposed rather than knocked down.
