A group that focuses on feeding its local community saved nearly 200kg of food.

The Ulverston Food Project was given the chance to rescue 26 crates of food, amounting to a 'whopping' 197.6kg, thanks to the town's M&S.

This came about through a 'chiller malfunction' at the local supermarket, which meant the food would have otherwise gone to waste.

A spokesperson from the volunteer group said: "We were able to stock up our fridges and freezers which will provide for our Food Club members for weeks to come.

"We have to give a huge thank you to M&S for giving us the opportunity to rescue this food."

Their Food Clubs are open to low-income households and individuals with £5 per week giving you access to £50 worth of products.

And, if £5 proved to be too much, the group is privy to council funding that may be able to help in certain instances.

Whilst the clubs on Monday and Fridays are currently full, the team is curating a waiting list as they get ready to to launch a brand new Wednesday club to help even more people.

The team of volunteers typically collect 1.5 tonnes of food 'waste' from local supermarkets including Booths and Aldi, as well as M&S.

The bumper delivery on Friday served as a welcome bonus for the group, which is currently supporting over 60 families in the area on a regular basis.

"Please get in touch if you would like to be added to the list or volunteer your time to help us get it off the ground," the project added.

"Well done to Graham, Carol, Helen, Lynda and Debs for saving all of this food from landfill!"

The clubs are based in the old St John’s Ambulance building in The Ellers and share a huge variety of fresh, frozen and tinned produce for those in need.
