TWO friends are uniting to shave their head and beard off for three local charities.

Kenny Thomas will cut his hair and Ryan Fletcher will shave off his five-year-grown beard at the Hope and Anchor Pub in Ulverston.

This is the first time the friends team up in an effort to boost Mr Thomas' charitable efforts as the 64-year-old man has been cutting his hair for charity for the past nine years.

They will be donating the money to three groups including the North West Air Ambulance, Ulverston inshore rescue and the Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team.

Every year Mr Thomas dies his hair and beard in the most diverse colours, from pink to green, raising between £1,000 to £2,000 for several charities.

"I just sit down inside the pub, someone gets a pair of scissors and customers put money in my pot and they have a go at shaving my head off," he said.

Mr Thomas works behind the bar at the Hope and Anchor where he keeps a pot to collect money for the charities.

"Apart from the donations already made I have raised around £1,100 already - hopefully it will be close to £2,000 again," he said.

"I thoroughly enjoy looking a plonker for two or three months of the year plus all of these three charities are totally reliant on charity money. They have got no funding anyway. They save people's lives."

"It does not matter how stupid you may look - just do something for charity and donate it for charities that need it," said Mr Thomas.

"Every year my hair grows back so I do it again the next year. When it stops growing then I will stop doing it."

Saturday will be the first time in five years since Mr Fletcher had a clean shave.

He said: "I have quite a handsome beard but it will all grow back in a year."

To make a donation visit the Hope and Anchor in Ulverston at 8pm on Saturday, April 6.
