A family butchers in Grange-over-Sands has proved to be a prime cut in the industry.

That is after Higginsons of Grange received recognition in two prestigious awards, building upon its well established success.

In March, they were named as a finalist in the North West Family Business Awards in the Culinary Trailblazers category and, in the same week, they also clinched a Gold Award at the Q Guild of Butchers Smithfield Awards.

Owner, Mark Porter said: “We’re very proud of what we do here and over the years we’ve picked up lots of awards.

"But being recognised in two separate awards like this demonstrates that we’re still up there at the top of our game as independent, family-owned high street butchers.”

Higginsons were one of seven businesses named as finalists in the North West Family Business Awards Food & Drink Producers category, which celebrates exceptional family-run culinary producers who contribute to putting the region firmly on the culinary map.

As finalists, Higginsons will now receive a visit from a panel of judges from across the region before the winners are announced at the awards celebration on Friday, May 10.

On March 22, Higginsons also received the news that one of their limited-edition products created by butchery assistant Jodie Park, the ‘Chicken Kiev Bomb’, had won a Gold Award.

More than 200 products were put forward for judging by butchers from up and down the UK for the annual Smithfield Awards, to showcase their craftsmanship, innovation and skill.

Higginsons' Gold award-winning product will now contest for the Smithfield Diamond Award for Best in Category and potentially the Smithfield Platinum Award for Best Overall Product at the awards lunch being held at Butchers Hall, London on Wednesday, April 24.

Gordon Wallace, Q Guild Manager, commented: “The Smithfield Awards serve as a platform to highlight the pinnacle of craft butchery, elevating standards and inspiring product innovation.

"Achieving a Gold award is a significant accomplishment, and we extend our best wishes to Higginsons as we approach our upcoming award ceremony.”
