A family-owned garden centre in Dalton has been named as the best in the north of England.

Charnley's Home and Garden Centre, found on Crooklands Brow, won the accolade as part of the North England Prestige Awards for 2023/2024.

Sam Procter, the managing director at the centre, explained how he and the rest of the team were 'absolutely elated' with the news.

He said: "Everyone here puts in so much work and it's such a tough industry to be a part of.

"That means that, when the acknowledgement comes like this, it's even better to experience."

Having been the one to put the centre's name forward for the award, Sam was rightfully pleased that the business is getting the kudos it deserves.

"I think it shows the way we have grown and developed over recent years," he added.

"We're a compassionate business with St Mary's Hospice, supporting these local charities, and I suppose the judges were able to see that connection we have with the community."

The judges themselves were said to be particular impressed with the 'warm and friendly' atmosphere that has been created in the centre.

"That's all down to the people, from the staff members on the floor to the managers directing their teams," said Sam.

"For us to stand out just proves that our efforts to look after staff are worthwhile because we're a fairly small centre facing a lot of competition in the region."

For Sam, the award does not have to solely be good news for the business but for the entirety of Dalton as well.

He said: "We hope to draw more people into town because we're always looking for ways to help Dalton.

"If visitors come to us because of this award, then there's every chance that they'll use over services in the area, and they'll get to see just how good Dalton is.

"Dalton has a great history, landscape and coastline and we're lucky to be just one part of that."
