Barrow's shipyard has seen the creation of some of the greatest British ships and submarines for over 120 years. 

Between the turn of the century and the outbreak of World War 1, Barrow produced around 98 vessels with 64 being submarines for the Royal Navy. 

The town produced, and continues to produce, a wide variety of naval and commercial vessels - which where some of the biggest ever seen at the time.

SS Oriana

The largest ocean liner to built at Barrow was Oriana which sailed in 1960. She was 804 ft long (245 m), 97 ft wide (30 m) and weighed 41,910 tonnes. 

Oriana was also the largest for the Orient as she was substantially larger than the three other current post-war ships.

She was also the first ocean liner to be equipped with bow thrusters to aid manoeuvrability when docking.

The British Admiral

Launched on March 17, 1965 was The British Admiral, one of the world's biggest tankers at the time.

The supertanker measured 917 ft by 128ft and could hold 103,000 tons of oil with the cargo held in seven centre tanks and 10 wing tanks.

It was so large that many local experts predicted a tidal wave in the dock system but they were wrong.

HMS Revenge

The largest navy ship built in Barrow was the mighy battleship HMS Revenge. Her Full load displacement was just over 36,000 tons

Launched at Vickers on May 29 in 1915, she was finished at a cost of £2.4m.

The vessel was 31,130 tons fully loaded and 620ft long with a top speed of 26mph.

The main armour was eight guns of 15in (381mm) arranged in four twin gun turrets. 

The HMA1 (Her Majesty's Airship number 1 - nicknamed 'Mayfly'

The HMA1, was intended to be an aerial scout and was similar in design to contemporary Zeppelins.

The 512 ft long hand and 46 ft wide Mayfly was the largest airship anyone had ever seen at the time when she emerged from her dock in May,1911, after two years in the hangar.

She was was beaten back by a 40-knot wind after not having enough lifting power.

Another attempt in September 1911 saw a sudden gust of wind which resulted in the vessel breaking in half in seconds.

She broke her back with part of the main structure crumpled into the dock.
