Furness Cricket Club's under 16's superstar helped Durham get their first win at UAE's Gulf Cup Championship - while also clinching the Man of the Match accolade.

15-year-old Faizan Ghumman has been a top-scoring batsman in all-age county group games (U11-U18) for last three years while playing for Cumbria.

The leg spinner, from Barrow, was selected last year to represent Durham Junior Academy on a tour to the UAE.

Overall 14 boys from across the region were invited to represent Durham in the tournament including two boys from Cumbria.

Furness Cricket Club had been raising funds for Faizan to have the overseas experience and further his career in professional cricket.

Now over in the UAE, Faizan competed in this month's match against CFI Ajman UAE X1 select at the MCC stadium with Ajman scoring 250 runs in 50 overs.

Durham batters were at 101 with first fours wickets down and it appeared rather challenging to win the game.

But the Cumbria player stepped up and made his first 50 in UAE on his way to scoring 75 which steered Durham to victory by five wickets.

The Mail: Faizan with the Furness Cricket Club teamFaizan's proud dad Saqib Ghumman said: "I am very proud that Faizan was able to adjust to different conditions and pitch and able to perform on the day.

"He also bowled very well with leg spin and took two wickets of opposition opening batters along with taking two catches in the game.

"He was given Man of Match award on the day by Ajman MCC Cricket chairman Mr Shahzad."
