Windermere is regarded as "the best lake in England" by thousands of tourists who flock to see one of Cumbria's most prized jewels.

Known for being England's largest lake at 10.5 miles long, Windermere is generally regarded as one of the most impressive sights in the UK.

That said, there's always one.

One disgruntled tourist took to Tripadvisor to compare 'Windermere' to "Baghdad at the height of their 'troubles'," in a scathing online review.

The user doltologist's, imaginative shall we say, review read: "Seen one lake, seen 'em all as they say, but try not to make this one the first, or it will be the last lake you will ever want to see - ESPECIALLY in summer !! In fact, if you never see Lake Windermere, it will be no great loss. Believe me.

"It's full of tourists with their sprogs eating fish and chips and drinking gallons of Watneys Red Barrel and singing Torremolinos (a la Monty Python).

"It's what I imagine Baghdad to have been like at the height of their 'troubles'.

"If you have no sense of decorum, no love of life and absolutely no appreciation of peace, quiet, tranquility and etiquette, then this is definitely the place for you.

"I made the mistake of going there recently. I put up with the place for about 30 minutes and left. I shall no be back."

"This is the best lake in England"

Windermere has a 4.5 rating out of 4156 reviews on Tripadvisor, which is a highly respectable score indeed.

Scores of other tourists were impressed by the "best lake in England", making the aforementioned 'review' stand out alone entirely.

As one most recent reviewer said: "This is the best lake in England. Another thing it is a very beautiful lake. Also the views of this lake are breathtaking. Lastly, it is usually too cold to go swimming."

Another commented: "Visited on a beautiful day and the only word I can use to describe this place is awesome. Scenery out of this world.

"Living in a busy town, it was just the tonic to spend a weekend away visiting relatives in this neck of the woods."
