A SOUTH Cumbria primary school has been praised after a recent Ofsted inspection handed it a 'Good' rating.

Grange Church of England Primary School, on Fell Drive, was given the grading after a visit by lead Ofsted inspector Emma Jackson and Ofsted inspector Paul Edmondson after a visit on September 26 and 27.

The school currently has 174 on its roll between the ages of three and 11.

The report noted that pupils were happy at the school.

It said: "Grange Church of England Primary School is a happy place to be.

"Pupils enjoy attending each day. Everyone is welcome in this caring and inclusive school.

"Pupils, including children in the early years, know that adults will look after them and keep them safe."

The inspectors also praised the school's high expectations for pupils and their 'polite' behaviour.

"The school has high expectations for pupils’ achievement, including for pupils with special educational needs and or disabilities (SEND)," it said.

"Pupils live up to these expectations and achieve well. They listen carefully and work hard in lessons. They know they can ask for help if they do not understand something.

"Pupils behave very well. They are polite and courteous and move around the school in an orderly manner. They enjoy the rewards they receive for behaving sensibly."

While the report noted that the school has 'developed a broad and ambitious curriculum for all pupils, including pupils with SEND', it also identified one area that the school could improve.

It said: "In a small number of subjects, the curriculum does not specify clearly enough what pupils must learn.

"Consequently, sometimes teaching presents too much information for pupils to remember.

"The school should ensure that the curriculum clearly identifies the key knowledge and skills that staff should teach so that pupils can remember more and know more."

Headteacher Phillipa Summers said: "I am delighted to see that Ofsted recognised our ambitious curriculum and the care we provide for all our children.

"Pupils here really do try to do their very best, and I thank the fantastic school team and whole school community for their support. I am so proud of them."
