THREE brave friends with a combined age of 250 have ventured into a zip-line challenge in the Lake District.

Linda Bowman, 81, Mavis Paylor, 85, and Beryl Buckham, 84, from south Cumbria, took on the zip trekking on Zip World in Windermere.

They have set a new record at the adventure park for being the oldest trio to brave the zip line.

Ms Bowman had already taken the challenge last year.

She said: "Last year, when I was 80, my family brought me to Tree Top Trek, which I completed, and it was horrible but I loved the zip line.

"I was on holiday with Mavis and Beryl and they said they would like to do the zip line so when we came home, we just went to Windermere and did it."

She said: "I'm proud of ourselves. There was a little bit of trepidation and nerves but I have done it before so I was quite confident - I would say I'm venturous.

"The staff at Windermere were absolutely fantastic. They looked after us and it was a real pleasure."

When asked what she has to say to people her age who would like to take on the challenge, Ms Bowman said: "Go ahead and do it. It is marvellous."

Tom Patrick Kenny, general manager of Zip World, said: "It was lovely to see Linda, Mavis and Beryl at Zip World Windermere.

"All three were confident, fun and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. We joked together about filming the video and inspiring people to get out from in front of the TV and challenge themselves.

"You are never too old to have fun. I absolutely want friends like that when I'm in my 80s."
