The Lake District National Park has been overlooked as the 'most Instagrammable national park in the UK' in favour of an area in Hampshire.

Residents of the Lake District might be shocked to hear that the New Forest National Park was deemed the most 'Instagrammable', despite the Cumbrian oasis often being cited as the most beautiful spot in the UK.

Pink Storage analysed Instagram data to find out the most popular national parks in the UK based on Instagram hashtags per square mile of each park.

Analysis has shown that New Forest National Park is the most popular National Park in the UK with 5,133 tagged photos per square mile - not the Lake District.

Located primarily in southwestern Hampshire it gained its national park designation in 2005, but its origins date back many centuries to 1079 when William the Conqueror used it as a hunting area.

The Lake District National Park is the second most popular National Park in the UK, scoring 5,099 tagged photos per square mile.

Established in 1951, it's the largest National Park in England and it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status for outstanding national beauty.

The Peak District National Park is the third most popular National Park with 4,860 tagged photos.  The Peak District stretches across parts of Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire.  It was the first National Park in the UK.

Scott Evans, owner of Pink Storage commented on the findings "Social media plays an important role in everyday life including where we choose to go on vacation.

"Whether we choose to go on holidays in the UK or abroad, many social media users will pull up their favourite social platform to look at other people's photos before deciding to go there themselves."

"Knowing where other users are tagging themselves may help you make the choice on where you want to visit next."
