THERE was a full house as 100 women flooded in for Splashdance, a new water aerobics class at the Park Leisure Centre in Barrow in 1994.

Every square inch of the pool was used, as the women marched up and down, leapt in the air and fired imaginary bows and arrows during the session.

“With a variety of exercises and an instructor who seemed to enjoy the workout as much as the women, the class will be deluged with participants every week,” reported The Mail.

In July 1994 the Park Leisure Centre launched its summer activities programme.

The main event of the first day was the indoor play scheme, with entertainment provided by professional entertainers The Wonderboys.

Not surprisingly considering the hot weather, the swimming pool was busy but the weather had a different effect on the indoor playscheme.

Sports contract manager Phil Cooper said: “We had a reasonable response to the playscheme, but I think the weather has meant that parents have taken their children out and about.

“By the end of the week we hope to be busy though”

Barrow mayor Betty Willacy was on hand to help get the scheme under way and was more than happy to join in the fun with the local youngsters.

In July 1995, Barrow Park Leisure Centre - which was hoping to launch its own junior badminton club soon - held a very successful short badminton course for youngsters.

The course formed part of a Badminton Association of England initiative aimed at encouraging the younger age group to take up the popular racquet sport.

Three summer courses had been arranged, with two of them already filled and only a few places left on the third, which was due to take place in August.

Any child between the ages of six-11 could attend the short badminton course.
