BARROW'S MP has written to the Home Secretary urging him to tighten terror laws to keep extremists who still pose a risk to the public locked up after their formal sentence has expired.
John Woodcock wrote to Sajid Javid following the release of the Islamic hate preacher Anjem Choudary today (October 19).
The former prisoner served half of a five-and-a-half year sentence her received in 2016 for supporting the Middle East terror group ISIS.
In his letter, Mr Woodcock , an independent MP, said the UK should introduce a crackdown similar to the Australia law permitting what the country terms "post detention of high-risk terrorist offenders".
He said: "I am writing to urge you to follow Australia’s lead and urgently introduce an emergency law to allow Choudary and others who pose a similar risk to remain in custody after the formal expiry of their sentence.
"It is essential that we act fast in order to ensure that the British public is protected against terrorists who would otherwise be released back on to our streets."
