COUNCIL officers have spent more than £6,000 on work to reduce exposure to radon gas in 13 authority-owned residential properties across Barrow.

Barrow Borough Council has carried out testing and work on 13 of its council houses which were identified as having a risk of exposure from radon gas.

Work to seal the exterior of the properties has been carried out and the properties re-tested.

The remedial work has cost £450 per property while a re-test costs £37 for each home.

Radon is a radioactive gas which can only be detected special equipment. It comes from the rocks and soil found everywhere in the UK.

Although radon is everywhere some parts of the country, including areas across Barrow, Askam and Dalton are more likely to have high levels in buildings than others.

Barrow Borough Council's executive committee is due to retrospectively approve the expenditure at its meeting on October 24.
