A COMMUNITY do-gooders pulled together to rid a Furness river of litter.

Volunteers pulled on The Mail's Big Clean t-shirts and grabbed litter-pickers to clear rubbish around Mill Beck in Barrow.

The group did the litter pick as part of the town's Community Rivers Day, run by South Cumbria Rivers Trust in partnership with Barrow Community Kitchen and Tesco Metro.

Fiona Lowther, a Tesco community champion thanked all the volunteers who took part.

She said: "The area behind the shop was in dire need of a clean.

"There was so much rubbish that had been left there by people next to the river.

"We came to do this last year and thought that it might have stayed clean since then but it hadn't.

"Hopefully after our efforts this year it will stay tidy.

"Everyone came together and had a great day. It was nice to give the area a good clean because it is important that it is environments like this are kept tidy.

"We are very keen to work with the community with more events like these."

Also on the day, Mill Beck was the site of the activities, which included arts and crafts and river dipping, giving the assembled group - which included residents, Tesco staff and community kitchen volunteers - the chance to explore what was lurking in the water.
