A ROTARY club has presented two stalwart volunteers with a prestigious award.

There was VIP treatment for Barrow Sea Cadets (TS Sovereign) stalwarts Judith and David Swarbrick when they received the Barrow Rotary Club’s community and vocational award for 2018.

The pair arrived for lunch at the Lisdoonie Hotel in Abbey Road in a 1936 Rolls Royce.

Club members John Green and Bill Jones both spoke passionately of how the Swarbricks had devoted many years of voluntary service to the Sea Cadets in Barrow.

Mr Green explained that the Sea Cadet Corps was a registered charity and unlike the army and air cadets it is not funded by the government and has to raise funds for all its buildings and equipment, other than uniforms.

Currently the unit has 70 Cadets, 24 staff, nine members of the management committee and 11 parents and supporters unit assistants.

Mr Green said: “David and Judith have been involved with TS Sovereign and the Sea Cadet Corps for very many years and they play a really important role in the administration of the unit.

“Judith has been secretary to the unit management committee since 2006 while David plays an invaluable and varied role in the smooth running of the unit.

“Their first-hand knowledge and experience is invaluable and the management committee relies heavily on them and has total confidence in their expertise and integrity.”

The Barrow sea cadets were recently judged as the best unit in the North West for a third consecutive year.
