CAMPAIGNERS fighting for the future of a much-loved community asset have started to voice their objections to plans to demolish it.

Millom's swimming pool, which sits on the Millom School site, has been closed since last year, with bosses from Cumbria County Council saying the building was unfit for purpose and a health safety hazard.

But supporters have written to planning bosses in their latest efforts to save the facility after the county council submitted demolitions plans.

Councillor Jane Micklethwaite, the mayor of Millom, said the work should be postponed until after further consultation with residents and wanted to address planning chiefs herself.

Cllr Micklethwaite said: "The removal of a recreational facility should not take place without demonstrating, through an assessment that the facility is surplus to requirement or without the provision of an alternative or new facility.

"The invitation for cabinet members and the relevant officers, to visit Millom remains open, so they can truly gauge the strength of feeling in the community about the pool.

"Given the remoteness of Millom, from the source of the decision-making process, I also ask for the planning meeting to take place in Millom. Members of the committee cannot effectively assess the needs of the local community, from such a distance."

Other members of the campaign group have sent letters and emails to planning bosses ahead of a decision on the pool in Kendal on October 5..
