TOP young school gardeners were the winners of seven awards at Cumbria in Bloom 2018.

Representatives from Dane Ghyll Primary School, Barrow attended the awards ceremony at the Coronation Hall ,in Ulverston, to collect their prizes for the school gardens, including the award for achievement in the borough of Barrow.

Mrs Louise Postlethwaite, head gardener at the school also received a trophy and award for her commitment to Cumbria in Bloom.

Mrs Postlethwaite was awarded Community Champion for her works in the school garden and ensuring the gardens have remained to a high standard since the Cumbria in Bloom awards for schools began in 2012.

Dane Ghyll school have received awards every year since 2012.

Mrs Postlethwaite said: “I was delighted to receive this award, I have thoroughly enjoyed gardening with the children over the years and I hope the children will look back on their gardening days at Dane Ghyll with fond memories.”

Headteacher Mr Pete Mills said: “We are immensely proud of our school gardens - these awards don’t just recognise a year’s hard work - but years of hard work by every pupil in our school.

“We don’t garden to win awards but because it enriches our curriculum and teaches us fantastic life skills.

“Our school approaches everything with a growth mindset attitude and our garden is a fantastic example of that.

“ It is a physical example of teamwork, determination and synergy.”
