A FUNDAY raised money for three great causes and honoured a much missed member of a sporting family community.

Millom Cricket Club held a busy family funday on Saturday, enjoyed by those from across the generations.

The event was remembering Millom cricketer Gareth Sowerby who passed away aged 17, 20 years ago in October. The former Millom School headboy was involved in car crash at Askam.

Gareth is honoured by his club and the local cricket community each year through the Sowerby Cup, which is played in his name. Millom last won the cup 2017.

The funday, organised and staged by Gareth's family and the club community, was raising funds for Millom Junior Cricket, the North West Air Ambulance Charity and Millom Community First Responders.

The funday involved All Star Junior Cricket games and also games of soft ball out on the pitches.

Children enjoyed playing on the bouncy castle, with inflatable footballs and with children's cricket equipment.

There was also face painting and games for the youngsters. A guess the unicorn game gave the chance for someone to win a large unicorn balloon from Stuffers Party Products.

Erin Nugent, nine, was one of the children having a great time at the event. She had her face painted with a floral design and was enjoying the activities. There were also raffles and stalls inside the clubhouse.

Zara Pattinson, is one of Gareth's cousins and she is a bar secretary at Millom Cricket Club with her husband Stuart Pattinson.

Mrs Pattinson's family are a big part of the club, as her dad, Barry O' Callaghan is treasurer, her granddad Jack Sowerby, 89, is a former treasurer and is still helping out with the club, and her brother Paul O' Callaghan plays for the first team.

Mrs Pattinson, 31, said the family and the club were thankful to everyone who turned out to give their support to the day and remember Gareth.

She said: "Gareth was my cousin and he played for Millom Cricket Club.

"With it being the 20th anniversary of his death this year we wanted to hold a fundraising event.

"Gareth is remembered through everyone at the club. His legacy is here at the club.

"The funday has been fantastic. A lot of Gareth's friends have come along to the funday.

"We hope to raise lots of money for the causes."
