THE number of elderly people admitted to hospitals in University Hospitals Of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has risen by nine per cent in five years, according to new NHS data.
A charity fighting for older people's rights think that in many cases these admissions could be avoided with more funding and better services.
Latest figures reveal that hospitals in University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay trust admitted patients over 65 years old 52,340 times from April 2017 to March 2018, compared with 47,997 five years earlier.
These figures refer to the number of episodes of care for patients rather than the number of patients.
Data shows that population ageing is putting strain on medical services in University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay trust whereas episodes related to younger patients did not even rise.
Admissions of people between 30 and 55 years old dropped 11 per cent.
