1 From the bus stop walk along the Armboth road and at Stenkin Barn (with a white wall) turn left onto the footpath going parallel to the road. On meeting the road again turn left and after 100 yards left onto the public bridleway. Walk up the rocky path going alongside a fence and wood on the right. At the top of the slope go over a ladder stile. Cross the footbridge by Harrop Tarn and turn left onto a track. Turn left onto the footpath signed Watendlath, going through woodland, through a high gate then along an uphill path.

2 Just before reaching a fence gate turn right to head northwards, keeping parallel to the fence on the left. Cross the left corner of the fence with reflective metal rectangles and continue ahead over the rocky outcrop of Shivery Knott.

Either continue ahead to High Tove or optionally turn right and visit Armboth Fell. Wainwright wrote: “Peak-baggers and record chasers may have cause to visit (Armboth Fell) but other walkers may justifiably consider its ascent a waste of precious time and energy when so many more rewarding climbs are available, for the flat, desolate top is little better than a quagmire, a tangle of swamp and heather and mosses, as is much of the surrounding territory.” To visit, head directly to the fell, crossing several shallow streams. From its summit, follow a faint footpath back to the fence at High Tove.

3 Go through a fence gate and straight on to descend into Watendlath. Walk through the hamlet then turn left onto the bridleway signed Rosthwaite. Cross the packhorse bridge, turn left and at the end of Watendlath Tarn turn right off the main path. The next stage visits Grange Fell, which, according to Wainwright, ‘is nothing on the map, everything when beneath one’s feet’.

He added: “In small compass, here is concentrated the beauty, romance, interest and excitement of the typical Lakeland scene. Here Nature has given of her very best and produced a loveliness that is exquisite.”

Ascend the grassy slope, go through a kissing gate, keep right and follow the path alongside the wall on the right to Jopplety Howe. Avoid crossing a corner stile but continue along the wall to go over a ladder stile and ascend Brund Fell.

4 Continue in the same westerly direction facing scree slopes and Castle Crag on the other side of Borrowdale. Turn right at a path junction, descending over a valley, and cross a ladder stile.

Immediately below King’s Howe cross a fence stile and follow the path that goes around the fell to the left then swings to the right to its summit.

Follow the path initially heading northwards then twisting round to the right and descending (often steeply) through woodlands. Bear left at a path junction and keep right at the Y junction to reach the B5289. Turn right along the road for 200 yards to the bus stop by Grange bridge.
