HUNDREDS of people gathered to say farewell to a popular Barrow community stalwart.

Family and friends of Maureen Harris met at St Mary's Catholic Church, yesterday to pay their respects to the well-liked community figure, campaigner and one of The Mail's most prolific letter writers. Mrs Harris was taken to church by horse drawn carriage.

She had passed away peacefully, age 82, with her family around her on September 10. Mrs Harris was the wife of the late Barrow Rugby League legend, John 'Dinks' Harris. They were together for 50 years.

The avid writer had her letters published in The Mail for decades. She also campaigned to protect the NHS. The great grandmother, was originally of Salford and was evacuated Cark during the Second World War.

Father Manny Gribben, said Mrs Harris was an extraordinary lady, kind, generous and joyful. He said: "She really cared for people, especially her beloved family. She was a good and kind woman." Father Manny said she would be reunited in heaven with Dinks and her two late children.

Friend Jim Hamezeian said she was remarkable and led an active and full life."I loved Maureen and Dinks they were wonderful friends.

Maureen was a kind friend. Kindness is the number one attribute. To be kind it covers everything.

"I will never ever forget your kindness and bravery."
