A Team Skye cycling team have been taking part in a 30 day fundraising challenge.

Family and friends of the late Skye Mitchell are using pedal power in September to cover 300 miles in 30 days.

Skye's mum, Sharon Fry and the late teenager's auntie, Justine Mitchell, have led the sporting challenge to raise funds for her charity, A Skye Full of Stars, which helps local young people achieve their goals, and also towards Millom Community Track fund to support running locally.

Skye, passed away alongside her friend, Caitlin Huddleston, when the car they were in collided with a van near Bootle in July last year. The girls were 18-years-old.

Ms Fry and Mrs Mitchell, who both work at St James' Catholic Primary School, in Millom, have completed more than 200 miles so far on their bikes. In the evenings they cycle around the areas of Millom, Haverigg and The Green.

At the weekends they have travel further a field, including rides around Carnforth, Morecambe and Heysham.

On their local rides they have even been joined by youngster, Oliver Thompson, as he wanted to get involved and help the good causes.

Ms Fry, 48, of Millom, said: "We are out every night and put our Skye t.shirts on. "We've had great support off family and friends.

"Our community beep their horns when they see us, which really spurs us on.

"The community has really rallied around us to give their support and we are grateful.

"We've been doing longer rides on a Sunday, about 20 miles.

"We are fund raising on the Just Giving Skye Full of Stars page and we are well over our target of £400. We have around £700 now.

"Half of the money is going to our charity A Skye Full of Stars and the other half to Millom Community Track towards their new track.

"We want to keep helping our community as Skye always did and she loved running."

A Syke Full of Stars is helping talented young people achieve their dreams in many fields. It has supported young sports stars go on tours, talented musicians with Cumbria Youth Orchestra and a promising young chef and more.
