THOUSANDS of homes across Cumbria are without powers due to Storm Ali - including hundreds in South Lakeland.

Storm Ali is battering the county, with gusts of 96mph already having been recorded. Cumbria Police are warning the public to take precautions.

The Met Office issued an amber weather warning yesterday for northern Cumbria - the second highest alert level - meaning there is potential "risk to life and property" due to wind.

South Cumbria is still under the yellow warning until 10pm, with gusts of 50-60 mph forecast.

In the Lake District National Park and surrounding area there are more than 500 properties are without power, there are also homes hit by power cuts outside of Ulverston. Electricity North West engineers are working to tackle the issues.

There has been an alert of a period of heavy rainfall from midday Thursday into Friday morning. The Environment Agency said there is the potential for some Flood Alerts being issued for parts of Cumbria during this period. This means that flooding is possible to low lying land and roads.
