'A Stitch in Time' - Thursday
The Beach Hut Gallery in Grange-over-Sands kicks off the autumn season with a new exhibition 'A Stitch in Time'. Organiser Gabrielle Chandler said "Some artists focus on the concept of sewing while others are looking at time itself, its an intriguing collection of artworks". Artists include Rachel Gibson and David Macauley, Angie Mitchell and Beverley White, plus ceramicist Sally Toms. Open Thursday to Sunday 10.30am to 5pm. www.thebeachhutgallery.co.uk
Green Door Art Trail – 29/30 September
This autumn its the thirteenth Green Door Art Trail, a flagship event which has gone from strength to strength. The art trail has expanded across South Lakeland with 63 artists taking part in 26 venues, some are opening up their studios, while others are sharing a venue. Larger venues are offering refreshments and the catalogue offers recommendations for cafes, pubs and good views. www.thebeachhutgallery.co.uk
'Elisabeth Frink: Fragility and Power' - until Saturday 29 September
Last chance to see Elisabeth Frink's exhibition, one of the most exciting female sculptors of C21st. Frink's artworks combine the fragile nature of humanity with its power. The exhibition explores her influences, methods and stories using her own words. There are over 50 artworks including sculpture, maquettes and works on paper. Large sculptures include: Walking; Madonna; Riace lll. Kerri Offord from Lakeland Arts said: “Frink created emotive artworks that were politically charged.” www.abbotthall.org.uk
'This Girl Did’: Dorothy Wordsworth & Women Mountaineers' - September to December
Dorothy Wordsworth climbed Scafell Pike in 1818. Her description of the climb is one of the earliest accounts of this conquest. By the end of the 19th century the mountain was recognised as a favourite among British climbers. Dorothy’s account is part of a tradition of early mountaineering where women pioneered new routes and upland walking. The exhibition explores Dorothy’s place in women’s mountaineering and how the Lake District became important female pioneers. www.wordsworth.org.uk
Woman's Hour, Craft Prize - Sept/Oct
This V&A's exhibition marks the 70th anniversary of BBC Woman’s Hour. The 12 finalists show the spectrum of contemporary crafts, including woven willow, ceramics, installations, metalwork, furniture, darned jumpers, a bespoke bicycle and intricate jewellery box. The exhibition is curated by Rheged and showcases makers who live and work in the North of England and Scotland. www.rheged.com
