HISTORICAL photographs of Barrow and Furness are proving to be a hit in the town's market.

Black and white images showing the likes of Dalton Road, Ramsden Square, Barrow shipyard and the docks in the early 1900s and before are being exhibited in Barrow Market Hall.

The framed photographs were donated to John Murphy. All of the images had been on display in the former White House Hotel, on Abbey Road, which was demolished in recent years.

Mr Murphy, a former borough and county councillor, who leads guided walks over the sands to Piel Island, got in touch with Barrow mayor, Councillor Bill McEwan about the photos.

They decided that the photos should be exhibited to the public and then be sold or auctioned off in aid of charities.

The photos are on their own stand in the centre of the market hall, opposite Glitterartti and across from Robsons. They will be on display for around one month.

They will be sold to raise funds for Councillor McEwan's mayoral charities, MIND in Furness, St Mary's Hospice and Women's Committee Matters.

Cllr McEwan, who official opened the display on Friday, said: "The display is absolutely fantastic. John approached me and we decided to display these great photos in Barrow Market Hall for as many people to be able to see them.

"The exhibition opened on Friday and the response is great. "People were very interested straight away. The plan is to have them on display for around a month and then sell them for my three mayoral charities.

"We have had interest in one or more already.

"I'd encourage people to go along to the market and have a look at the display."

Mr Murphy said: "It's very fortunate that people will get to see these photos again on public display before they are sold to raise money for the charities."

There is also a memories book on the stall where people can leave a message.

Those interested in buying a photograph can leave a message with market manager Jackie Armstrong.

Barrow Market Hall's Facebook post about the exhibition reads: " If you enjoy looking at historical photos of Barrow-in Furness and surrounding area pop in to take a look at our fantastic collection of black and white prints.

"We’ve already had many shoppers stop by and take a look. It’s brought back many fond memories and we would like to invite everyone who visits to write down their memories for us in our keepsake Memory Book and also to leave a review of the exhibition on one of our bestof barrow review cards and pop it in the postbox on the table. The photos will be on display for a month and then auctioned off to the highest bidder. Councillor Murphy will be donating all proceeds to The Mayors Charity.

Please call in and take a look, opposite Glitterartti and across from Robsons."

Cllr McEwan is viewing some more old borough photographs which could be on display in the near future.
