READERS have reacted largely positively to the news the ongoing roadworks on Walney’s Jubilee Bridge are set to continue for at least another month.

Highways bosses said poor weather conditions and the increasingly extensive repairs needed to the bridge have made the project’s original completion date of the end of September impossible.

Cumbria County Council bosses said traffic restrictions will now remain in place until the end of October.

Last week community leaders described the announcement as “unwelcome” but recognised the work was “essential” for the safety of all those using the bridge including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

And Mail readers have been having their say on our Facebook page.

Jade Jones said: “It hasn’t caused that much disturbance, no-one can moan, surely?

Darren Clarke said: “It’s the best traffic has flowed in a very long time.”

Nikki Griffiths added: “I live just off Mill Lane and agree with Darren.

“Only time it slows is late evening when temporary lights come on. And apart from the speeding drivers on Mill Lane, it’s been fine.”

Stacy Woodhouse said: “It runs smoother but it’s a pain in the neck going all the way round all the time.”

Clare Luddy said the detour had proved positive for trade.

“The only good thing about the detour is that it brings some lovely customers to Mill Lane Post Office and Walney Spar,” she said.

Anne Constable said the detour was costing her more money.

“Been so much easier getting onto Walney but living at North Scale, it is costing me extra in petrol and wear and tear on the car going over those dreadful speed bumps on Mill Lane,” she said.

Others, however, said they have had bad experiences.

Jennifer Culley said: “I finish at 8pm so often sit for ages waiting at the lights. I just want to get home! It’s fine during the day.”

And Maz Goodwin commented: “Not good stuck in a taxi for 15 mins at the lights and the driver keeps his meter running.”
