A MILLOM woman has been left furious after “mindless vandals” smashed the wing mirror off her car while it was parked on her drive.

Beth Park, 25, of Surrey Street, woke up to find her Golf GTD outside with the passenger side wing mirror hanging off - and now she wants CCTV to be put up to stop it happening again.

She said: “The damage occurred over night right outside the house.

"Usually we have the window open so would have heard it any other night. It affected my whole day.

“I was supposed to attend college but was unable to as the wing mirror was still hanging on and had to wait for the police to arrive as I wanted them to have a record, although we knew there was nothing they could really do.”

Miss Park said crime in the area is particularly bad and is currently on the increase.

The Millom resident said: “We kind of felt like we were wasting police time but if we don’t record these incidents then the council do not realise how bad crime is in the area, small crimes such as this should be noticed as it is definitely on the increase.”

Millom Town Council have revealed plans for CCTV to be put up in some places around Millom. Miss Park said there should be more cameras placed around the town to discourage crime.

She said: “We are now arranging for our own CCTV, another expense that we shouldn’t have to pay as we should be able to live here without the threat of mindless vandalism.

"I think more CCTV in the area would definitely discourage these people from doing it, or at least we would be able to hold someone to account and to foot the bill.”

The council is working on putting up cameras around Millom’s park to combat crime in the area.

Councillors are also considering other places CCTV may be of use, however, Councillor Bob Kelly, of Millom Town Council, said he is unsure how residents would reacted if it was placed all around the town.

Cllr Kelly said: “We are going through with CCTV at the park. I can also see the desire to have it elsewhere but I think people will feel it is like Big Brother and we’re spying. I am fearful of the way it will be regarded, however, if vandalism like this continues then we will be forced to do something.”
