Contamination fear at former gasworks site

By Fraser RobertsonFIFTEEN new homes could be built in Millom in two separate developments.

H Jones, of Sunnycroft, Boundary Lane, Millom, has applied for permission for the Argyle Street development, through his agent Neil Price Ltd, of Barrow.

Millom town councillors have no objections in principle, but raised road safety concerns stemming from the increased traffic the extra houses would bring.

Councillor Ray Cole said: “There are concerns about road safety issues in that area and there have been a few incidents that may or may not have been reported.

“This would cause additional traffic and I would like that to be looked at when this goes through.

“A comment should be made that the issue of road safety should be looked at.”

Cheshire-based firm Gorsey Developments have applied for permission through agents Architectural Design Ltd, of Windermere, to demolish the existing commercial building at Millom Road and build two two-storey/two bedroom houses, three two-storey/three bedroom houses and four three-storey/four bedroom houses.

Councillor Audrey Gabbert voiced fears about land contamination because of the site’s history as the gasworks.

She said: “This development is on the site of the old gasworks and we know what problems there were with contamination.

“I would suggest that the site should be tested.”

Cllr Gabbert was told that the tests had been carried out and the application stated that the results showed no contamination.

But she said: “We ought to be sure on that.”

Meanwhile, councillors had no objections to applications for a two-storey side extension at 43 Victoria Road, in Millom, a single storey extension at Slack’s factory at Borwick Rails, a new electric door and signs at Rowlands, 43 Wellington Street, or two roller shutters and a Dutch awning at Patton’s Family Butchers, at 28 Wellington Street.
