Celebrity walkers for Wainwright challenge
Last updated at 14:01, Tuesday, 20 January 2009
CELEBRITY walkers Stuart Maconie and Julia Bradbury will be strapping on their boots and rising to a Lake District challenge later this year.
For Radio 2 DJ Mr Maconie, who is one of the speakers at this year’s Words by the Water literature festival in Keswick, it means taking a step closer to a significant fell walking achievement.
The Wainwright Society Challenge for 2009 is The Lakeland 214 Challenge.
This is to coincide with the completion of the revision of Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells by Chris Jesty.
Book seven is being published this year by Frances Lincoln Limited.
During a nine-day period the Wainwright Society will have walkers reaching the summit of every one of the 214 fells listed in Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides.
The event will take place between May 9 and May 17 and participants can choose whichever date is convenient for them to ascend their nominated fell.
The 214 fells are those contained in the guides, originally published between 1955 and 1966 and updated by Mr Jesty between 2004 and 2009.
Mr Maconie is patron and will be climbing Scoat Fell in the Western Fells – one of the final two remaining fells he has to tackle to complete all 214 fells.
Miss Bradbury – who presents TV programme Wainwright Walks – will be ascending Pillar.
The nominated charities are SARDA (Lakes) and SARDA (England), the Search & Rescue Dogs Association.
Information about the challenge is available at www.wainwright.org.uk and registration is available to the public.
