Lunch club aims to feed hundreds in Furness
Last updated at 09:35, Tuesday, 20 January 2009
AN ambitious project is being launched to feed 250 people in the harsh winter weather.
The Great Thursday Lunch Club will be held at five simultaneous venues throughout Barrow: St Aidan’s Church, on Middle Hill, St George’s Church, on Roose Road, Abbey Road Baptist Church, Trinity Church, on Abbey Road, and the Banqueting Hall, in Barrow Town Hall.
The feast will begin on February 26 from 11am to 2pm.
The aim of the evening is to help residents save money on food and heating bills and also give them the chance to socialise with other people.
The scheme is being run by Age Concern and the Evening Mail.
“We are trying to promote healthy eating for people for three or four hours.
“It will help give people a healthy meal and they will save money on heating their house while they are out and also on buying food.”
It is hoped to provide hot food for up to 50 diners per venue. An appeal has also been made for talented chefs to volunteer their services for the charitable event.
Evening Mail editor Jonathan Lee said: “The concept and the timing of the Great Thursday Lunch couldn’t be better.
“We’re delighted to throw our weight behind it and are sure the community will rally round and make this a fantastic feel-good initiative just when people need it most.”
Admission costs £2 including a two-course meal and a cup of tea.
