Sellafield defies gloom by offering 60 jobs for graduates

SELLAFIELD bosses are defying the gloom dogging the job market – by launching a recruitment campaign.
The firm responsible for running the sprawling West Cumbrian nuclear complex has revealed it wants to take on about 60 graduates in 2009.
Sellafield Limited said new recruits are vital to the future of the site, with jobs available ranging from those in design, construction and commissioning, to operations and decommissioning.
Next year’s graduate intake is based on analysis of Sellafield’s needs, and is up from 45 recruited last year.
A spokeswoman said: “Sellafield Ltd recognises the benefits to the business of bringing in a steady intake of new graduates every year.
“Unlike many industries we are not cutting the numbers of graduates we are seeking this year.
“New graduates are recruited to key roles in the organisation and many will take up senior position later in their careers.
“They are vital to the future of Sellafield Ltd.”
The graduates recruited will join a two-year training scheme in their fields of expertise.
Not all of them will be based directly at Sellafield. About 15 of the posts are at Risley, near Warrington.
Of the posts available, 42 are engineering positions – chemical, mechanical, civil, electrical and electronic, material/metallurgy, manuf-acturing and project – and 16 in science, for graduates in chemistry, physics and applied mathematics.
A further four jobs in business are available for those with qualifications in the fields of human resources and finance.
The vacancies are being advertised online while staff have also been to careers fairs at universities.
Management said applications from west Cumbrian graduates would be particularly welcomed. Candidates who apply and meet the criteria are invited to take aptitude tests and telephone interviews, and are assessed by experts at Sellafield’s assessment centre.
Successful graduates are invited for site visits.
Jackie McClintock, Sellafield’s graduate recruitment manager, said: “The campaign is creating lots of interest so anyone looking for a role with Sellafield Ltd needs to be applying fairly soon.”
Applicants are also welcomed for work placement opportunities.
