Tribute to our fallen heroes

BARROW Mayor and former pop band member, councillor Dave Roberts, kept his chain of office on as he belted out songs at an unusual Armistice Day singalong.

The Walney Conservative Association said its Armistice concert and singalong at Vickerstown Institute yesterday was such a big success that it will be staged again next year. Around 250 adults, including pensioners aged up to 98, and children were at the institute for the wartime musical extravaganza compered by Barrow borough Tory councillor, David Marcus.

Well-known local singers Eileen Lithgow and Jennifer Craig also joined in the fun, which saw many wartime favourite songs sung such as Run Rabbit Run, White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll Meet Again.

Two priests, the Reverend John Hodkinson from St Mary’s Anglican church, and Father Paul Harris from St Columba’s RC church, both Walney, conducted prayers to remember those killed and hurt in wars. Children from South Walney junior school and the Chetwynde School accordion band also took part.

Cllr Marcus said the mayor had spent an hour at the function and had belted out some numbers. Cllr Roberts was a member of Patents Pending.

Homage was paid to the war dead yesterday at the cenotaph in Barrow Park. Veterans and children from Ramsden Infant School were among those present for the two minute silence.
