The majority were small and often started either deliberately or by fireworks, according to a spokesman.

They included a tree house blaze on Cavendish Dock Road at 7.30pm, followed by a bonfire which damaged asphalt on Stanley Park at 8.15pm.

At 8.30pm crews raced to an address on Abbotsmead Approach where a quad bike had been set alight by a firework that had been thrown into a trailer, but the fire was out on arrival.

Fires in two wheelie bins followed in Cook Street at 8.45pm and Telford Street at 9pm.

At 11.30pm crews went to Walney to put out a grass fire on the golf course.

A fire service spokesman said it was a busy night but explained that on previous years had attended more than 16 incidents on November 5.
