Plan to build six semis on village field

A NEW housing estate is planned for Askam.

FIELD OF DREAMS: Land off Lord Street, Askam, which has been earmarked for six semi-detached houses JON GRANGER REF: 0448447

If it is given the go-ahead, six three-bedroom semis will be built on land off Lord Street.

Atherton Developments in Ulverston is behind the project and is seeking planning permission from Barrow Borough Council.

Mark Gadsden, consulting engineer and agent for Atherton Developments, said work would start as soon as possible if planning chiefs gave it the green light.

Mr Gadsden has written a detailed report, called a design and access statement, about the plans.

He says in the report: “In evaluating the design function of the proposal, consideration has had to be given to the proposal being a standalone development suitable for family occupancy within a price range that is affordable.

“Additionally, it is recognised that densities of a suitable standard have to be established.

“As a result, because it is a small development, the house style will remain the same using three sets of semi-detached property.

“A single access road is to be constructed with suitable vehicular turning facilities and adequate parking within the guidelines of two vehicles per dwelling, including some communal parking for visitors.

“The design of the individual properties has been seriously considered to take account of the need for reasonable communal space within the property as well as three individual bedrooms for an average-sized family.”

And Mr Gadsden adds: “The developer has recognised that currently road access is not up to normal standards and has included provision within the application for bringing the entrance road from Lord Street which is part adopted to an acceptable standard.

“This will be extended into the site itself to serve the new properties.”

Council officials told the Evening Mail that residents had raised “concerns” about the proposals.

Councillors on the planning committee will decide on September 23 or October 14 whether to grant the application and allow the homes to be built.
