SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT: The Washington pub in Roose Road, Barrow, where the bouncy castle generator was based

Casey Johnson was hurt while playing in the beer garden of The Washington Hotel, Barrow.

Casey was playing with her brothers Jake, eight, Lewis, four, and other children in the outdoor play area of the Roose Road pub. Mum Laura Johnson said the adults heard a sound similar to when someone touches a fan.

The 27-year-old, of Leicester Street, Barrow, said: “As I ran over I saw she was bleeding so I ran to the bathroom with her.

“She was screaming – she was in a lot of pain. I was crying. I rang my boyfriend to take us to hospital.

“It took one side of her thumb and the nail off down to the bone.”

Casey’s right thumb is still bandaged following the incident on August 3.

Mrs Johnson say she has been back to hospital every other day to have the dressing changed. She says the machine part of the bouncy castle was uncovered, and she is now considering taking legal action.

Mrs Johnson said: “It’s shocking. It’s a popular place with children. I have contacted my solicitors.”

Tracy Clarke, landlady of The Washington Hotel, said: “It is up to the parents to watch their children.

“The equipment is checked regularly. We have done everything we can to make sure it is safe.”

The pub has signs up which read: “Children are welcome but please ensure they are supervised at all times. The management accept no responsibility for loss or injury whilst on the premises. This includes when children are on or around any play equipment in the garden.”
