Drainage problems hit camp site

DRAINAGE problems have hit a South Lakeland campsite again.

Tammi Price, who arrived with her husband, John, their two children, Jessica and Leighton, and two dogs on Monday, said rain on Monday night had put the campsite area under water.

She said: “We’re packing up and going. It rained all night and the campsite is now under water. There are very few dry pitches and a lot of the tents are under water. There were quite a few dissatisfied people this morning.

“We’re in a motorhome, so it wasn’t too bad but the awning is inches under water.

“We made the booking on Sunday on the internet and they must have known about the conditions then. We were supposed to stay until Friday.

“Hopefully highlighting the issue will be able to save somebody’s holiday in the future – if they do something about the drainage. With the bank holiday coming up, there will be even more people coming.”

The Evening Mail reported last week how a mum and daughter from Carlisle were forced to sleep in their car when their pitch became waterlogged.

The pair woke to find their tent floating in a huge puddle, while their neighbours called in South Lakeland District Council’s environmental health department because of the flooding and other problems.

A spokesman for Lakeland Leisure said: “The reason is the inordinate amount of rain we’ve been having and this is such a low lying area. They’ve got 16 pumps on the campsite currently pumping off water. They just can’t cope with the amount of rain there has been.”

“It’s been a bad summer and the ground is saturated and the water’s not going away.

“The camp management is doing everything it can and made drying facilities available and things like that. The staff are doing everything they can to help the campers but it’s unfortunate that the rain has been so heavy.”
