Wheelie bin service may roll into Millom

MILLOM could benefit from a new scheme to provide an extra 4,500 homes in the borough with a fortnightly wheelie bin service.

It is not yet known where the service will operate but the council says it could be Millom.

The Copeland Borough Council executive committee accepted the money at a meeting last week.

A council spokesman said: “Copeland Borough Council’s executive committee has agreed to extend the wheelie bin scheme to an additional 4,000 to 4,500 across Copeland.

“This extension is likely to take place in April next year, once rounds have been coordinated and we are confident that customers are aware of the changes.

“This extension is excellent news for the many residents who have requested wheeled bins and should help us to increase the recycling rate in the borough. We don’t know where the service will operate but Millom has as much chance as anywhere.”

Millom mayor Pauline Altree has backed the move.

She said: “I don’t have a wheelie bin and I would like to have one.

“They are especially good for people who have gardens because you can put compost in the brown ones.

“What I can’t understand is why people without gardens get them and some people with gardens don’t have them.

“Wheelie bins would be a nuisance in narrow streets like Holborn Hill because you can’t walk past them on collection day without going into the road, so maybe bin bags would be better up there.”
