Pupils to star in world’s biggest youth music event

By Natalie ChapplesCHILDREN from a village school were set to showcase their talents at the world’s biggest youth music festival today.
The pupils, from Penny Bridge CE School in Greenodd, were to perform at the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham.
Eighteen children from class four were set to wow the Adrian Boult Hall audience with their act Waltz Espana.
The percussion piece was adapted by teacher Jane Thedham, the school’s music coordinator, to demonstrate the capability and versatility of the nine to 11-year-olds.
Penny Bridge’s exciting and vibrant Waltz Espana includes a vocal solo, recorder accompaniment, tambourines, wood blocks, triangles, cymbals and costumed Spanish dance.
The national festival is a six-day celebration with performances by 10,000 young musicians and singers from across the UK.
The pupils were invited to perform after impressing festival judges in March.
Mrs Thedham, who accompanies the group on the piano, said: “The adjudicators were very impressed with the children’s performance and said that they were a superb example of class music-making.
“As a class, we have never competed before so it’s very special to have won a place at such a prestigious festival.”
A chamber music trio from Cartmel Music Centre is set to perform at the festival on Friday.
The Penny Bridge pupils will perform Waltz Espana for the community during a concert at Greenodd Village Hall on Monday July 14.
Other musicians from the school will also be performing.
The show starts at 7pm.
Tickets are available from the school by calling 01229 861307 or on the door.
