£1,000 boost for Barrow Food Bank to help families

A DRIVE to help a vital service cope with rising demand over the summer holidays has received a welcome donation.

Barrow Food Bank is the latest group to benefit from the Lake District Farmers Armstrong Family Charitable Fund and has been presented with £1,000.

The money will go towards providing emergency food parcels to people in need and making sure families don’t go hungry.

It is estimated that the £1,000 alone will pay for 595kg of food and could feed 20 families for three days each.

The cheque was presented to owner of Tastebuds Cafe, in Duke Street, Barrow, and Rotary Club of Furness member, Roy Worthington, on behalf of Barrow Food Bank.

Scores of volunteers help collect, pack and distribute food parcels to struggling residents at sites in Barrow, Ulverston and Millom.

The money was raised at an annual celebrity chef event held in Dalton, hosted and sponsored by Clarence House Country Hotel and Restaurant.

Mr Worthington said: “It’s a national disgrace that we have to have foodbanks.

“I looked at the latest figures in an article a few weeks and it’s not worrying, it’s frightening.”

The Evening Mail has also launched a Tonne of Tins campaign for Barrow Food Bank which has so far collected around 1,200kg of food in cash and tin donations.

Anyone who wants to donate to the campaign should address cheques to Barrow Food Bank and post them to the Evening Mail’s offices in Abbey Road, Barrow.

Alternatively, to donate by credit or debit card, call our accounts team to make a secure payment on 01229 840173.
