NEW details have been announced for roadworks that will tackle a notorious flood zone on the A590.

Work to help tackle repeated flooding on the A590 at the Lindal dip is set to get under way this Saturday, June 11.

However, temporary traffic lights to be put in place on June 11 and 12 will now be in operation from 6am to 8pm during this period, following a previous announcement they would operate overnight.

These roadworks are part of a bigger schedule of work taking place between June 11 and July 6 at the Lindal dip, which has become notorious for flooding during wet weather.

Highways England project manager, Peter Gee, said last week: "While we have investigated and discounted a number of remedial options over the last few years, we are now in sight of developing a permanent fix.

"In the meantime, these drainage improvements will not only help provide some temporary relief but also contribute to a long-term solution."

A key feature of the scheme is to install a large drain across the carriageway to funnel and channel away run-off water from the highway.

Last week, the clerk for Lindal and Marton Parish Council, Jack Smith, said: "It is more of a nuisance and a hindrance for the people using it to get to work.

"It shows how much of a lifeline the A590 is. If either flooding or roadworks or whatever else occurs, then it can have a major impact on the passage of traffic."

- 6am till 8pm from Saturday, June 11, to Sunday, June 12 (daytime)

- From 8pm on Friday, June 17 to 6am on Monday, June 20 (all times)

Work is due to be completed by Saturday, July 9. Temporary traffic lights may be in use overnight between 8pm and 6am outside of these times.

Drivers are being advised that a 40mph speed limit will be in place along with occasional 10mph convoys, where drivers will be guided through the roadworks by a contractor's vehicle.
