THERE was a good response to the appeal for information about a group picture of Dalton district youngsters thought to have been taken during the Victory over Japan celebrations held at the end of the Second World War in July 1945.
It turned out that the event was correct and that most of the young faces are from Dalton but the backdrop to the picture is Thwaite Flat.
We have not been able to place all the children in order but have pieced together several of the names.
Barrow’s last town clerk Derek Lyon, of Infield Park, got in touch to confirm the location of the picture.
He writes: “The photograph was taken at Thwaite Flat and my wife, Vi, is the little blond girl on the extreme left.
“She too thinks it was a VJ day celebration and that the great majority of the youngsters went to schools in Dalton.
“She lived then at Rakesmoor Fram and went to St Paul’s School but spent a lot of time at Thwaite Flat due to family connections.
“Names she recollects are Dorothy Parkin, Moyra Sarginson, Afra Oliver and her brother.”
Moyra Woodburn, nee Sarginson, from Park Side, Swarthmoor, writes: “Thank you for the picture of the children at Thwaite Flat, it brought back very happy childhood memories for me.
“I think we may have had a garden fete that afternoon.
“Just out of sight behind the group is Goldmire Quarry and to the left hand side of the wood is St Helens Farm, now private houses. I recognise Dorothy Parkin, whose father worked the signal box at Thwaite Flat.
“There is also myself, Dorothy Sarginson and the Moore Family, of Joyce, Ramond and Dorothy.
“They lived in the next railway crossing house where Mrs Moore used to open the gates to let people through.
“Also there are the Lynch boys, Albert, Walter and Gerard, who moved to Skipton.”
Also among those pictured is Shirley Williams, who went on to become a telephonist and Ivy Baines, from Dalton, who was a very good runner at Dowdales School.
There was a companion picture taken of adults at the Thwaite Flat celebrations, does any reader have a copy?
